Applications for 2022 are now closed.

Thanks to everyone who applied.

Spica is an enormous project, and we need more hands to help, which is why we started the recruits project. This is our program to get more interested and talented people like you into Copenhagen Suborbitals, while teaching you how to build rockets before helping with Spica. Applications for the 2022 recruits team are now open, so if this sounds interesting to you, keep reading!

We also made a short video on our youtube channel announcing this, go watch it if you haven’t:

What the recruits will be doing

Over the course of 18 months, the recruits will be designing, building, testing and flying a medium-sized bi-propellant rocket based on previous CS experience and technology. This includes laying out the target capabilities of the rocket, designing the structure and fluids system, designing electronics and software architecture, soldering, coding, testing, and iterating before finally launching the rocket! We want to push our BPM5 engine to the limits and squeeze out every last bit of performance, so we’ll be refining the technology to achieve higher and higher pressures.

Even though the project duration is 18 months, a new team will be started every year, giving an overlap of around half a year. The teams start in winter and launch during summer of the following year. Work on the rocket will happen around once a week in the workshop with an additional virtual meeting during the week. Of course, design tasks can be done during the week as well.

Who and what we need

This year, we are aiming for a team of 12 to 16 people with a variety of skills and interests. Specifically, we are looking for:

  • 2 media people, who will be responsible for filming, video editing and social media outreach
  • 2 fundraising and outreach people, who will be looking for company sponsorships, either material or monetary to help fund the rocket
  • 1 producer, who will be responsible for tying together the story of the recruits in a coherent narrative
  • 4 mechanical people, who will work with the aerodynamics, structure and manufacturing. Preferable you have an interest in or experience with some mechanical design and machining
  • 3 electronics people, who will be responsible for designing, producing, testing and integrating the electronics on the rocket
  • 2 software people, who will design the software architecture and implement it on a microcontroller
  • 2 project managers, who will keep the project on track and make sure everyone has something to do

As a bonus, if we receive a lot of applications, there will also be space for an additional:

  • 4 payload specialists, who will be developing a payload to fly on the rocket, parallel to the rocket development itself

You don’t need to be an expert in any of these things to apply, all you need is to be interested and willing to learn. We have internal courses on everything from rocket engine dynamics to machining, welding and CAM. If you already are an expert, you are still more than welcome of course, we will find something to challenge everyone!

The producer can be remote, but it is very much preferable that you are close to the workshop in Copenhagen. Lastly, the responsibilities are not set in stone. If you applied for software, but you are also interested in machining, that is no problem. The producer can also help with editing, electronics people can help with filming, etc. It is all very flexible.

How to apply

Applications are closed now, but check back again next year!

[Recruits 2022] (mechanical)

Hello,

I was wondering if I’d be able to help you guys out on the mechanical side of things remotely. I’m in Canada and I own a cnc mill and lathe as well as TIG welding equipment and I also know how to create CAD designs and program CAM.

[Recruits 2022] software
I am Abhishek Dinesan, an undergraduate with specialization in computer science engineering. I’ve been an astrophile for as long as I can remember, with undying love and passion for astro-engineering and space technology.

My recent achievement in this field was when I was the chief engineer and software head of the team representing my university in the 2017-18 European Rover Challenge, in which we secured the 27th position worldwide. Currently, I am a robotics software engineer intern working on the SLAM part of an autonomous self-navigating indoor mobile robot, at Trizlabz – a robotics and AI startup at my hometown.

On a personal note, I’ve been developing and honing my skills with microcontrollers ever since my 7th grade when I got to program an Arduino for the first time in my life. I guess the beginning of my passion for this field can be traced back to that exact moment as well.

To summarize, my above mentioned passions, skills and achievements are why I believe I would be a perfect candidate for your Copenhagen Suborbitals recruits program. Looking forward to working with the Spica team soon.

Hi Abhishek! I’m a part of a team that will be participating in European Rover Challenge this year. Do you think it’ll be possible to connect on discord? My discord username is pear#8331

[Recruits 2022] Mechanical
I am a graduate in Mechanical engineering with extensive experience in flying and fixed wing aircraft management. In my recent past, I have worked as professional Cad designer with fluency in Solidworks, fusion , inventor, regenerative designing and Ansys, MATLAB etc for CFD and simulation.
I also carry hands on experience in prototyping building composite structures, CNC, 3d printer building and customization.
During my Undergrad Final year project , I lead a team of 4 to build a VTOL autonomous long range aircraft with a full 3d printed honeycomb fuselage structure reinforced with carbon fiber to exploit the possibility of 3d printing technology.
In my latest role, I was in the full-life cycle of an R&D project worth US$ 0.3M starting from conceptualization to prototyping & testing. I received recognition from being on top of deadlines and ensuring client deliverables were on time even if it demanded some extra hours from my personal schedule.
My work experience in different domains coupled with interest in project management would make me an asset to the team. I look foreword to hear from Team Spica soon.

[Recruits 2022] *Remote* Mechanical Design/Software

Hello,
My name is Tristan Duran, and I am an online engineering student in the United States. I have been looking for a rocket club to join to advance and apply my knowledge in the design process. This has proven quite difficult as most are tied to university campuses, me being an online student. I hope to one day work as an engineer at a rocket company. This means being a recruit at Copenhagen Suborbital would be a very helpful and awesome opportunity!

I have experience using several CAD programs, mainly CATIA. I also have experience doing various engineering computations and analysis in MATLAB. I am familiar with the Arduino platform and microcontrollers on a hobby level.

As for software development, I am close to releasing a mobile game I have been working on for over a year. This was developed in the Unity game engine using C#. I learned a lot in the process and would like to apply my programming knowledge to other applications if needed.

I look forward to hearing back from the team!
Sincerely,
Tristan

[Recruits 2022] Mechanical.

Hello, I am Jack Woods, and am an avid aerospace enthusiast with amateur experience and knowledge in propulsion systems. I am from the United States and would be able to do remote or on-site work if need be. I am invested and supportive of the goals and missions placed forth by Copenhagen suborbital and would appreciate the opportunity to contribute in any way possible. I have experience with several CAD programs, mainly Fusion 360 Solidworks.

In terms of personal experience, I spent my last summer interning at a local college’s CubeSat program, where I aided in the development of their communications system. I also am currently working on a hobbyist project building a small pressure-fed liquid-fueled rocket engine.

Looking forward to hearing back from the team and seeing where Spica will go moving forward.
